Īnanga - Face Mask
Īnanga (Galaxias maculatus) are the smallest and most common of the 5 native fish species caught as whitebait. These fish have a diadromous life-cycle, meaning they migrate between freshwater and the ocean as part of their life-cycle. Like many other native New Zealand freshwater fish species, inanga are declining with a New Zealand threat status is 'At risk - Declining'.
Threats include disturbance and modifications to their spawning habitat.
How do we protect them?
We can help inanga by fencing stock from waterways, planting native vegetation along the water's edge, removing barriers that allow inanga to move upstream. Let's raise awareness of this threatened species by wearing an inanga shirt loud and proud.
50% of the profits are donated to protecting New Zealand waterways.
