Kākahi - Kid's Shirt
Kākahi or freshwater mussels of the species Echyridella aucklandica are rare, with small populations mainly found in streams throughout northern New Zealand.
E.aucklandica are classified as "threatened - nationally vulnerable, meaning that they are facing a medium risk of extinction. One of the reasons behind their decline may be because of a specialised part of their life-cycle, in which their larvae require a host fish to survive. Recent research has found that the Common smelt (Retropinna retropinna) may be their only host.
How do we protect them?
Here, we need to look after Kākahi and their host fish species. We can help Kākahi by fencing stock from waterways, planting native vegetation along the water's edge, and removing barriers for diadromous host-fish to move up and down stream.
50% of the profits are donated to protecting New Zealand waterways.
