Kōura in colour - Face Mask
Kōura or freshwater crayfish (Paranephrops planifrons) are considered a taonga species (treasured in Māori culture) and are often found in streams, lakes and ponds throughout the North Island, and in some parts of the South Island of New Zealand.
Kōura are a threatened species and populations are gradually decreasing in some areas, probably due to habitat modification and land intensification.
How do we protect them?
We can help Kōura by fencing stock from waterways, planting native vegetation along the water's edge and leaving them alone.
We can be a voice for the voiceless, and raising awareness of this threatened species by wearing a Kōura shirt loud and proud.
50% of the profits are donated to protecting New Zealand waterways.
